It's about time we had a proper thread for SOM in the work discussion section. I am back from MK, and now I have a lot to tell you!
For comparison: I saw SOM with Summer Strallen and Simon McCorkindale at the Palladium in London. I would say that Summer Strallen and Connie Fisher are both equally phenomenal.
Simon is a good actor but Michael is the "musical man" of the two. He actually did sing more often than Simon did. I could hear him very clearly as he joined in with his colleagues. He has a very powerful voice! He says it's microphones but his colleagues have microphones, too.
I saw the musical twice on two subsequent days and I totally enjoyed it. They got standing ovations twice. My favourite song was "No way to stop it", followed by "Something good". But, of course, I loved all the songs! I missed "Favourite Things" in the bedroom scene which was replaced by "Lonely Goatherd". At one point Cpt von Trapp says something like "it would be nice to have a ship under me again" as the Nazis "offer" him a post on one of their battleships. I thought these second thoughts were not in line with his character ("I will not bow my head to the men I despise"). Michael frequently raised his voice to make it very clear he was going to stand up to the new regime (and he can be very loud in speech and song if he chooses to).
After the performances, I met Connie and Michael. On the first day Michael was really in a rush and jumped down some stairs past me but on the second day we did talk a bit. My way of being "michaeled" was that I lost my words in mid-sentence. My mind just went blank. I wanted to shout "oh help" just like Maria did (what's so fearsome about that?). There was nothing there but a cloud in my head. Honestly, I don't know how to deal with it, especially as English isn't my first language. Anyway, I got Michael's signature. He says he is way too busy to record songs from SOM . I said I'd rather have no CD than a Michael with a heart attack.
Connie went out of her way to talk to her fans and have pictures taken, too. She struck me as a very kind and cheerful person. I wish her all the success in the world!

Hi, Gordina!
I am glad you had such a wonderful time and got to talk to Michael again afterwards. I know what you mean about your mind going blank, he has that effect when you meet him. Shame about the CD, but as you say, it's better to have Michael in one piece than making himself ill.
I too, had a fantastic time yesterday. I thought the show was even better in Milton Keyens than it was in Southampton. I noticed they had made a few small changes in some scenes and dialogue, which were good. Everyone was on top form and all gave brilliant performances. Especially 'our' ever gorgeous Michael, Some of the children were played by different actors this time, but they were all talented and adorable. It was the wonderful Kirsty playing Maria again, as Connie doesn't do matinees.
The theatre was packed and we were in the front row right next to the orchestra pit. It was fasinating to watch the musicians at work. Also it was brilliant being that close to the stage and Michael, you could see his every expression. Pure magic!
I agree with you about the 'battleship' line not fitting in. And when he shouted he made me jump. He has a very powerful voice. My favourite song is still Michael singing Edelwiess and his guitar accompaniment was a lot more intricate this time, in keeping with his wonderful musical talent. I did think he looked a little slimmer, I hope he is looking after himself and not overworking too much. (He still looks stunning in his naval uniform and cap)
This is an amazing show, I can't wait to see it again in Llandudno, next May.

Wow, sounds like you had a wonderful time Joan, and you to Gordina.
Would love to hear how he now plays his guitar in respect of Edelweiss - but going to have to wait until Llandudno to see that.
Yes, he does have a powerful voice - very masterful - makes you go all goosebumpy LOL could do with having a voice like that myself sometimes - make myself heard above the racket here sometimes LOL anyone would think , that on occasion, that my lot were in competition with one another to see who was the loudest !!
And lucky you and Gordina seeing Michael in that Naval Uniform and Hat too - honestly "The Hat" will have a dressing room all of its own at this rate LOL. You said that Michael was slimmer ? well as it goes on, he is probably burning it all off with what he is doing - only to be expected would think that he is taking good care of himself - - its like me with the horses - I am slimmer than i was than when i first started back, but weigh not much less and i still eat the same as i did before , so its muscle that has built up, weighs more than other tissue, but look slimmer (not complaining ) so would think that its quite possible that that is whats gone on with Michael, that its just all muscle after all muscle does have "memory" goes back after a bit when you start using them so with what he is doing, hardly surprising but - what a lovely thought a toned Mr Praed - - ahem, enough of that !!! LOL
Reading both of your reviews as it were, really makes me wish that the time that SOM is in Llandudno wasn't soooooooo far away LOL - it will probably have evolved even more by then - and Joan, you will love Llandudno , the seafront there especially, where the venue is - gorgeous - such an inspiring place to have a theatre , and lots of lovely tea and cake places - worth checking out LOL.
Thank you both for letting us know how it went - love hearing about it. Thank you again.

Michael has assured me that he is fine and everything is working out really well for him at the moment. So not to worry.
Gordina
P.S.: By the way, there was a distinct smell of goats lingering over the souvenir shop. The guy selling the stuff didn't believe me. I think they scented the bags!

That's good to know, Gordina! Thank you.
LOL! I saw the goats singing away, but didn't notice any smell.

LOL! Sam, what a lovely thought indeed.
Llandudno does look a lovely place, it was on a travel program the other day. I am really looking forward to seeing SoM (And Michael) there.

Hi, Kim
Michael didn't look ill, just slimmer. I know he tends to lose weight when he is working. As long as he is eating well he will be fine. He doesn't get anything to eat in SoM, not like he did in 'The Murder Game,' I think he enjoyed 'tucking in'. Kirsty did get to eat some cake, that was very funny.

Oh, you lucky lot! Those who get to see him more than once. I would love to see him again but can't really afford to. I did enjoy my time in Southampton though. I didn't get to see much merchandise when I was there however. This Hallowe'en just gone, was in Sainsbury's, Haywards Heath, wondered what the noise was, looked round - it was a child with a singing goat! I hadn't seen one before. Now I know what you mean about annoying!

Those goats drove me crazy because the guy at the souvenir shop made sure they'd all sing all the time.
Michael was upbeat when I met him, and he was perfectly fine. I know that he gets enough rest between performances, and he certainly gets enough food. It's normal to loose weight when he is in such an exertive programme, at times doing two shows a day! But he is fit as a fiddle! Someone outside the stage door remarked on how young he looked. He could probably still grab his sword Albion and fight!
Yet, your good thoughts always reach him on some level. There is a credible scientific theory that we are all connected on a subconscious level. I certainly do send him supporting thoughts.

Ah, the annoying goats !!
My daughter spotted one - well to be fair there were a couple and yes, they were "singing" managed to persuade her that she didn't want one, that she a bit big now for that - think it was the novelty factor that was the appeal. She saw sense and had the mug instead - and an extra goody at the interval - mmm soemthing tells me she got me again didn't she LOL though i have learned not to give a choice as such when out - fatal , absolutely fatal to do so, as my lot can never make up their minds LOL
I am so glad we didn't get one, think that i would've stuck it up one of the flipping mountains here by now if we'd had one , and thrown it off the top LOL
With respect to your comment Gordina about how someone said how young Michael looked - when we went to Cardiff, i overheard one woman say to her friend that she remembered Michael from RoS and that he was just a gorgeous now as he was then, and her friend agreeing with her, think i did mention it before - anyway, I couldn't help but smile to myself when i overheard that comment - obviously people with very good taste

I am sure you are right, Gordina! I know I am always sending my good wishes Michael's way. It's lovely to hear he is so fit and well, and enjoying his work at the moment. Wouldn't be wonderful to see him 'grab his sword Albion and fight' again? He would still be the definitive Robin Hood, just as he was in RoS.
LOL! Perhaps we should have one of those goats as our mascot?
